In the old days there was a tradition: On the sidewalk, outside the front door,
an old chair was placed draped with a butcher's apron to show that the sausage was ready!
For as far back as shortly after the Civil War, Drier's Meat Market has been selling only the finest of meats and cheeses. On this page you will see some pictures which show you what our shop looks like. Memorabilia collected over the years adorns the walls from top to bottom. Friends, family and our most valued customers have contributed the decorations that made Drier's Meat Market not only one of the best butcher's shops around, but a warm, friendly place to visit.
Over the past century many famous people have became regular customers of Drier's Meat Market to purchase our famous ham, sausages, and baloney (at Drier's, we think spelling this as "bologna" can't possibly be as tasty). Some of these people are Carl Sandburg, Larry Hagman, Mayor Daley of Chicago, the Hormel Family, Roger Ebert to name a few. In 1980 Carl Sandburg wrote a poem about Ed Drier's baloney:
Thank you, dear Eddie
For your bottles and basket.
We've only one question
And now we will ask it.
We know cheese in a tub
And that liver's not bony.
But how in the world
Do you make your baloney?
Larry Hagman's hat (J. R. Ewing of the Dallas series) still hangs as part of the memorabilia at Drier's. The late Roger Ebert of the Chicago Suntimes called Drier's hams wonderful!
Some other memorabilia are: A script from the Dallas series signed by Larry Hagman; An original, signed Bill Mauldin "Willie" cartoon (the only one where he is smiling) and a rhinestone apron autographed by designer Bill Blass. From the sawdust on the floor to the chandeliers on the ceiling, the ambience is pure "Welcome to our store". Be sure to plan your trip with some extra time to see all these wonderful items that adorn the walls of Drier's Meat Market.
